Intellectual Flexibility

Emma Willard School strives to educate a generation of learners ready and able to address the most pressing issues of their time.

Students are asked to consider big questions and to work to solve big problems. At each level, students encounter challenging texts, grapple with difficult problems, and write about complex ideas. Students practice analytical reasoning, seek to discover what is beyond the page, and examine the root of a problem. Students experiment, apply knowledge and skills to novel situations, and engage in authentic creative expression. Through reflection and revision, faculty guide students to take intellectual risks, and learn to navigate failure with humor and resilience. As we seek to prepare students for the next step in their education, the Emma Willard School faculty are constantly engaged in shaping a curriculum that balances breadth, depth, and a multidisciplinary understanding of learning.
